Asignificant change has occurred in the field of cybersecurity with a decree published and signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Ümit Önal, known for his senior roles at Türk Telekom, has been appointed as the Head of the Cybersecurity Directorate. The appointment was officially announced in the Official Gazette.

New Era in Cybersecurity Strategies
Ümit Önal, a graduate of Istanbul University’s Faculty of Communication, began his career in the media sector in 2007. However, his main rise to prominence came in the fields of telecommunication and technology.
Önal previously held critical positions within the Turkuvaz Media Group, including General Manager of ATV and Member of the Executive Board. In 2015, while serving as the General Manager and Board Member of Digitürk, he was a key figure who managed the process of the company’s transfer to the international giant BeIN Media Group.
Joining the Türk Telekom family at the end of 2016, Önal was appointed as CEO in August 2019 and has been serving as a Member of the Board of Directors since March 2022.
How Will His Media and Technology Background Affect the Institution?
The appointment of Önal, who possesses a deep management background focused on technology and media, is interpreted as potentially bringing a different perspective to the Cybersecurity Directorate’s digital security strategies.
However, expectations for the new head are considerably high. The independence of the cybersecurity body, the protection of the nation’s critical infrastructure, and the implementation of internal structural reforms will be the main issues closely monitored by the public. It is noted that this appointment opens a new chapter in Turkey’s cybersecurity roadmap.
